UNCODE - Unified Modelling Language for
Component Design
Use of UML for component-oriented development
The initial subject of UNCODE was the integration and correct use of UML in a appropriate tool focused on
component-oriented development. During execution of the experiment we recognised that we needed a suitable
lifecycle model in order to deal with new organisational and working structures resulting from component
orientation. Forschungszentrum Informatik (FZI) Karlsruhe, a research institute with wide experience in software
technology, supported us translating the fundamental research results into practical applications. The project
was completed at the end of January 1999.
Key lessons learnt
- Using UML improves communication between development teams and customer / suppliers.
- Architectural changes (component orientation) result in organisational changes.
- Technological advances resulted in higher satisfaction of new team members.
- Use of the Evolutionary Delivery Model improves process transparency as well as controlling efficiency.
