Research Project ATHENA
ATHENA
Advanced Technologies for Interoperability of Heterogeneous Enterprise Networks and their Applications
Objectives
The overall objective of the ATHENA project is that by 2010, enterprises will be able to seamlessly interoperate
with others. This vision will be ATHENA’s central reference, and programme management will focus on realizing the
vision. Individual projects will be selected based on their contribution to the attainment of this aim. The overall
objective can be subdivided into the following three categories:
Business Objectives
- to realise more economic businesses through improvements in efficiency, productivity and cost effectiveness;
- to realise more flexible, fluid and nimble businesses which are able to move into new markets and product areas rapidly;
- to realise more knowledge-intensive businesses which are based on the wide diffusion and re-use of knowledge assets;
Scienctific and Technological Objectives
- to define a technologically neutral reference model that provides a stable, generic foundation for specific technical
innovations;
- to define interoperability requirements for applications, data and communications and provide solutions that meet
these requirements;
- to provide methods which enterprises can use to manage organisational roles, skills, competencies, and knowledge
assets for its own operation and for collaboration with other enterprises;
Strategic Objectives
- Establish, become and be recognised in research and industry as a permanent world-class European Hub
acting as a reference point in interoperability.
Project impact
In a increasingly complex world, enterprises cannot be expected to be innovative purely on the basis of
their own
in-house knowledge and capabilities. Individual enterprises and SMEs in particular more and more depend on
interactions between external and internal inputs through knowledge sharing, community building and collaborative
networks which are themselves major clusters for innovation and drivers for competitive markets. ATHENA will
address technology components, the integration into systems and platforms, and the development of innovative
applications and services. The project aims to remove barriers to Interoperability, to transfer and apply the
research results in industrial sectors, and to foster a new ICT-enabled networked business culture. A key
impact therefore is expected to be a strategic focus on IT in enabling applications and services which are
more than ever business centric and matching more precisely specific customer needs –ATHENA will deliver a
commonly shared ATHENA Interoperability Framework alive with highly competitive applications and new market
opportunities.
